CV Writing Workshop

The Florida Museum Student Association (FMSA) and the UF Career Connection Center (C3) hosted a CV writing workshop tailored for graduate students led by Sammie Herrera, the CALS liaison with C3. Since a curriculum vitae is usually an applicant’s first point of contact with a prospective employer, workshop participants discussed how to compose CVs that highlight applicants’ relevant experiences

and skills. Workshop participants discussed how to translate academic skills to potential employers outside of academia and specific sections to include and also some information that shouldn’t be included in a CV, such as headshots or birthdate.

As a graduate student, it is often challenging to keep my CV updated consistently, which was a sentiment shared amongst most of the other workshop participants. We discussed the importance of carefully keeping track of awards, conference presentations, publications, and broader impacts so that new items are easy to incorporate into a CV. One never knows when the perfect job or fellowship opportunity might come along, so it is essential to be prepared with an updated CV.

Following the discussion, workshop participants went into smaller breakout sessions to trade CVs and offer feedback to other students. This portion of the workshop was especially helpful for me since I don’t regularly have the opportunity to see other graduate students’ CVs on a regular basis. It was inspiring to see some of the fascinating research and impressive achievements of my peers and get to see different ways of organizing CVs. The Florida Museum Student Association is planning on hosting more CV workshops in the future, so stay tuned for future opportunities.
